Senior Year

Get Job Ready

You have earned the title of Full-time Investment Banking Analyst. Now it is time to focus on the bigger picture: deal negotiation and transaction structuring.

Senior year is the bridge between student and professional. How you use this time determines the kind of analyst you become on day one.

Semester-by-Semester Breakdown

FALL

Maintaining Engagement and Off-Cycle Recruiting

What happens in fall senior year depends significantly on whether you are heading into a confirmed role or still building your path.

Got an IB Role

Maintain Engagement
  • Stay engaged with your firm’s communications regarding onboarding requirements and any pre-start assignments
  • Maintain relationships with future colleagues and peers you met during your summer internship. These connections matter when you walk through the door full time

Still Looking

Off-Cycle Recruiting
  • Continue reaching out to alumni and industry connections to inquire about off-cycle hiring opportunities
  • Target boutique and middle-market firms that hire full-time analysts on a rolling basis throughout the year
  • Consider alternative finance roles, including corporate banking, accounting, asset management, and equity research as potential stepping stones into IB after 6 months to 1 year of experience

WINTER

Continued Refinement and Revisiting the Basics

Winter is about deepening what you already know and filling in any remaining gaps before you start.

Got an IB Role

Continued Refinement
  • Take the skills you built last summer and find ways to apply them in a classroom or independent setting, whether that is financial modeling or Excel shortcuts
  • Familiarize yourself with research databases relevant to your group’s coverage area, such as FactSet and Capital IQ, and take advantage of any licenses available through your university
  • Ace your Series exams the first time. Putting in extra time outside mandatory firm classes gives you a real edge

Still Looking

Revisit the Basics
  • Revisit the fundamentals of interview preparation, technical knowledge, and professional development
  • Consider finance-related alternatives such as corporate banking, accounting, asset management, and equity research as legitimate stepping stones into IB after 6 months to 1 year out of school

SPRING

Relax and Reset

After a demanding few years, spring senior year is a rare window to breathe. Make the most of it.

If You Have an IB Role
  • Take time to genuinely relax before beginning your full-time role in the summer. Spend time with friends, pursue hobbies, and perhaps lighten your course load
  • You will not have many opportunities like this once you are at the desk, so make the most of it

Before You Start

Prior to Hitting the Desk

  • Ace your Series exams the first time. Most firms host mandatory classes during the summer, and extra self-study time outside those sessions makes a real difference
  • Build in extra time outside the classroom to study. These exams are not something you want to retake
